Our first stop for bread. I learned on this trip, by overhearing a tour guide, that croissants are regulated. According to what I heard, they have a minimum size and its ingredients are controlled. I don’t think that’s entirely accurate and a cursory online search doesn’t seem to show the actual source for that law. But I’ll take it that it’s an implied rule that honorable French bakers, when selling croissants, must make it with butter, not margarine and oil, and must sell the freshly baked croissant on the same day. Cyclists adopt a laissez-faire approach to traffic rules. I had to try french food in France. Note the reusable plastic containers for the fries and drink.Only when uploading this photo did I notice the petrified face by the statue’s foot. The night was getting cold, but I could have sat at the steps for a good 15 minutes.

I got to realize my “sit in a cafe and sip on coffee outdoors” dream.I opened the window. Needed some fresh air in my Airbnb.I sat at that bench for four minutes and stared at the painting pictured. I tried to get absorbed in that piece. I looked all around. Looked at the expressions on people’s faces. The way the cloth was artfully draped on the drum. The white smoke rising in the distance.

Well designed space to hold the artwork. Peaceful if you can ignore the throngs of people around you. And I can’t fault the crowds — better for this art to be accessible than stored in some warehouse located in a tax-free port.
