perfect as the enemy of good
Sometimes when asked what I like to do, I hesitantly reply that I like to write. The hesitation has grown uncomfortable. As of July 18, 2025 I have published one post this year. One.
There are many reasons for this dismal count. Chief among them, the false belief that I must have all my ducks lined in a row before I start typing a single word here. I need to start the day early, have the right writing playlist playing, and have my favorite cup of teh sitting on my left. If I do this, words will fly off my keyboard and magically arrange themselves on screen.
There’s this story that goes,1It’s probably from a study, but I’m not going to bother searching it up now because it’ll slow down my writing. two groups of new pottery students are given 30 days to create the best piece of pottery they can muster. The only difference between the two groups is that the second group is required to make something every day. At the end of the 30 days, the second group surpasses the first in skill. While the first group was worrying how to perfect their one piece of pottery, the second group was busy making something every day. They learned as they went along, never worrying about perfection.2Again I must be paraphrasing, but the point stands.
That’s pottery. This is writing. So this section of writing (titled Writing More) is for my shorter posts. Both in the amount of time I spend writing it and in its word count. It’s symbolically important that I’m writing this as I am now. Seated on a floor mattress with an exhausted plastic chair holding up my laptop. A laptop at 25% charge and not charging because I’m currently charging my phone which provides the hotspot needed for me to write and post this. I desperately want to sleep, but I don’t want to delay this any longer. I’ve chosen to write more now.
